Email Signature for Lawyers & Attorneys
Legal correspondence is formal by default, and your signature carries part of that formality. It also carries obligations: many bars and law societies have specific requirements for how practitioners identify themselves in electronic communications.
What a lawyer's signature should include
- Your full name and post-nominals exactly as registered with your bar or law society.
- Firm name, your role (Partner, Associate, Counsel) and practice area if your firm's style allows it.
- Regulatory identification, e.g. SRA number in England & Wales, state bar number in the US.
- A confidentiality and privilege notice. Keep it short: three lines is enforceable-looking; fifteen is wallpaper nobody reads.
- Direct dial rather than the switchboard.
What to leave out
- Photos and social icons, most firms' style guides prohibit them, and they undercut gravitas in contentious matters.
- Bright accent colours. Charcoal, navy, or your firm's exact brand colour only.
- Taglines like "fighting for you", your engagement letter does the marketing.
